The Recipe for Success

Allison King | Owner, King’s Kakery

The key ingredient for a happy life? That’s something many of us are in search of. For Allison King, owner of Oneonta’s King’s Kakery, the answer was to start her own business. She started baking at home in 2009, and her storefront bakery has quickly become a much-loved part of the community.

Allison, originally from Guyana, initially came to the area from New York City to visit a friend. According to Allison, “I loved it so much I went back to NYC, packed my stuff, and moved here. It’s been 20 years!” Among the many things she continues to love about the area include the rural atmosphere, crisp air, and the small, caring community. She counts fall as her favorite season because of the cool weather and natural beauty.

A typical work day for Allison starts well before sunrise. Around 4AM, she begins her 12 hour day “caking and baking,” fueled by iced or hot coffee. When the bakery opens, Allison shifts to greeting her enthusiastic customers, selling her ganache-filled chocolate pastries, cupcakes, huge brownies, and more of her favorites. Some of her favorite places to eat in Oneonta are Southside Diner, Autumn Cafe, and Bella Michaels, to name a few.

King’s Kakery is now in its new Main Street location in Oneonta, with a ribbon cutting in June 2021. The recipe for Allison King’s success can be found in her passion for baking and her love for the community she found here in Otsego County.
