Sweet Otsego County

Coleman and Heather Covington | Owners, Five Kids Bakehouse

For Coleman and Heather Covington, life in Otsego County is pretty sweet. As the owners of Five Kids Bakehouse, a bakery and cafe in Gilbertsville, their breads, pastries, and coffee fuel the local community. What started with selling Heather’s homemade baked goods from their front porch grew to a retail location in June 2021, thanks to support from the Gilbertsville community. Coleman remembers the line of cars waiting by the house for their Porch Pastry Saturday, this popularity convincing him that they needed to expand the business.

Coleman and Heather met in Washington, D.C., and returned to her hometown of Gilbertsville where they are raising five children (the inspiration for Five Kids Bakehouse): 14, 8 year old triplets, and a six year old. While Heather bakes and Coleman handles front of house operations and paperwork, the kids often help out in the bakery, whether they’re ringing up orders on the register, washing dishes, or prepping boxes.

The Gilbertsville community has embraced Five Kids Bakehouse, and Coleman enjoys its unique, eclectic mix of people. Even though it’s quick, he loves fall for all of its color and beauty. For people looking to move to Otsego County, Coleman offers the following advice:

“It’s very beautiful – take time to look around. Don’t take it for granted.”

Coleman and Heather turned a passion into a thriving business that is beloved by their community. If you’re ready to “take a look around,” it’s time to bring your talents to Otsego County, where the recipe for success awaits!
