Under Otsego County Skies

Erik Stengler | Professor, Cooperstown Graduate Program (SUNY Oneonta)

Surrounded by nature, picturesque lake views, and starry nighttime skies, Erik Stengler couldn’t have curated a better setting for his work as a professor in the Science Museum Studies track at the Cooperstown Graduate Program. With a PhD from Cambridge University and a background in science communication, he prepares graduate students for careers in museums across the country.

Originally from San Sebastian, Spain, Erik and his wife Cristina moved from Bristol, England to scenic Cooperstown, which Erik compares to “living in a nature reserve.” Leaving behind two of their three children to continue with college and work commitments was a challenge, but Erik found support within the program and SUNY Oneonta as his family settled into life in Otsego County. Living close enough to commute to work on foot allows Erik the opportunity for an “amazing walk along the lake with gorgeous landscapes” which he enjoys “even in the winter.”

Though he has an affinity for the cold conditions of winter, warmer weather activities like kayaking and swimming on Otsego Lake are favorites, as well. Erik also enjoys quiet strolls in Council Rock Park, which offers the perfect vantage point to observe Otsego Lake flow into the Susquehanna River, continuing its journey to the Chesapeake Bay.

With the stars aligning in Cooperstown for his work training future museum professionals, the idyllic surroundings continue to inspire Erik and his students. Whether he’s exploring the outdoors or inside the classroom, Erik has found a home here in Otsego County, where the beauty of nature is exhibited in all seasons.
